Honouring Inverclyde’s Heritage: SBMC Creates Signage for the Port Glasgow Skelpies

As one of Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE)’s social enterprises, Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company (SBMC) is known for its road, rail, and growing commercial signage work. And every so often, a project comes along with real local significance for our military veteran team.

The Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow sculpture, known locally as the “Skelpies”, is a striking landmark on the Lower Clyde waterfront. It celebrates centuries of shipbuilding heritage and stands as a powerful symbol of pride in the area. To help share that story with visitors, Discover Inverclyde commissioned new signage around the site.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase SBMC’s achievements to date and to encourage wider recognition of the role social enterprises can play in delivering inclusive employment and public value across the UK.

UK Government Scotland Office Minister Kirsty McNeill said:
“Ahead of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, it was a privilege to visit Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company to meet veterans working there and hear about their successful military to civilian career transitions at this King’s Award-winning social enterprise. It is clear that veterans truly enrich our economy and our communities, and our support is vital when they leave service.”
